The amazing second Dirk Pitt classic from multi-million-copy king of the adventure novel, Clive Cussler.

----------------------------------------

Major Dirk Pitt picked up the frantic distress call as he cruised his lumbering amphibious plane over the islands of the Aegean. Brady Air Force base was under fire, its entire force of jets destroyed on the ground . . . by just one First World War bi-plane!

A psychotic ex-Nazi, a bloodthirsty Greek strongman and a beautiful double agent set Pitt on the trail of the warped mastermind behind a devastating sabotage plot. And on that trail, danger and death are never far behind . . .

Entertaining,Major grasp of the behind the scene is somewhat over the top of credibility. Cussler has has written better books!

Great Book- Couldn't Put It Down.

This is the first book I have read by Clive Cussler. I will be reading more. This particular book held my interest all the way through. Well worth the read.

My first Cussler book

This was the first book by Cussler that I ever read, and I still buy every one that he releases nearly thirty years later - even though their quality is diminishing, in my opinion. I still read this one first when I re-read the series, even though it isn't the official first one - Cussler published an earlier, previously rejected story subsequently. This story defines the quintessential Dirk Pitt, the hero of a large number of future stories. He isn't a spy, so he doesn't get paid to be a Good Guy, but he always shows his charms to the ladies as he fights international criminals and terrorists. Cussler himself admits that he was going for a Bond-like character, but one that was more reliant on his own resources and ingenuity, rather than the backing of a Government. In Mayday! (called The Mediterranean Caper in the U.S.) Pitt stumbles into the middle of a battle, with one World War I bi-plane strafing grounded jet fighters on a U.S. Air Force base in Greece. This leads to him becoming involved with a billionaire's daughter, an international drug smuggling ring, and the discovery of a living fossil, all told with Cussler's wit and inventiveness. Later Cussler novels have Pitt doing ever more incredible, unlikely and downright unbelievable things, stretching the credibility of the reader to the point of dissatisfaction - Deus ex Machina gets a real workout sometimes! But this story doesn't suffer from that at all: it's a very good read. I give it a full five stars.
